Windy City Something Blue

I had such a wonderful week in Chicago getting to work on our very first public reading of Something Blue in Underscore Theatre Company’s Chicago Musical Theatre Festival. Thanks to very quick and very wonderful work by actors Britain Gebhardt, Sam Button-Harrison, and Alex Newkirk (pictured L-R), directors Isaac Loomer and Rachel Johnson, and music director Annabelle Revak, Julia and I got to see and hear the show in its full form for the first time – complete with suggestions of what a staging might look like!

We can’t wait to take what we’ve learned from our time in Chicago and see it in action next month when we get to hear Something Blue again, this time back home in NYC with Page 73. More info on that reading to come very soon!

Something Blue in Chicago!

Seven years after we wrote the first song for it, Something Blue is having its first public reading as part of the 2019 Chicago Musical Theatre Festival, produced by Underscore Theatre Company. I’m so thrilled to get the chance to hear it fully and so excited to get to spend a week working in Chicago!

More information is coming soon, but you can reserve your (free) tickets if you will be in Chicago on Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 18!

SPACE on Ryder Farm

I’m back in the city after an amazingly productive and beautiful week at SPACE on Ryder Farm of writing, eating, breathing fresh air, and making friends with woolly bear caterpillars. Julia and I made some great progress on thinking through Choreomania and made a giant leap towards a second draft of Something Blue.

I spent much of the week writing in the yurt, when I wasn’t harvesting dahlias or marveling at sunrises/sunsets.

We were thrilled to spend our time at SPACE with fellow P73er Blue Beckford Burrell, Working Farm playwright Antoinette Nwandu, and Stitcher podcasters Rachel Bonds, Ash Sanders, and Ellen Winter & Chris Litter

Thanks to Page 73 for sending us up for the week!

Something New, Something Fun, Something Blue is Something Done!

After a little over five years of off-and-on writing, we now have a first full draft of Something Blue! And we had the honor of hearing it outloud for the first time with some wonderful new friends – director Sash Bischoff and actors Robbie Collier Sublett, Rachel Flynn, and Ryan Everett Wood.

What started as a challenge to write the smallest show we could imagine became a three-person, hushed, complicated, human musical.

We’re already on to rewrites for the next draft, and we’re looking forward to sharing the show sometime very soon!

Videos from the Feinstein’s/54 Below concert are now online! Watch the whole 17 song playlist above (starting with the finale, of course.)

Thanks to all who came up/down/in/over to that midtown basement to share the evening with us. Thanks to Jennifer Ashley Tepper and the whole 54 Below staff for inviting us to kick off this wonderful (and ongoing!) series. And thanks, especially, to our 26 singers, actors, and musicians for bringing so much of our work to life!
